The convent of the Capuchin Friars at Monterosso al Mare belongs to the order of Capuchin Friars Minor in Genoa’s area, and it has always been a site of reference for both local community and visitors of the Cinque Terre. Considering Monterosso history the Capuchin Friars have always had a pivotal role in the community as spiritual guide; Monterosso inhabitants have always loved and respected the Convent which, together with the “Madonna di Soviore” Sanctuary, represents a very strong devotion benchmark. People from Monterosso have always felt a veneration towards the Convent that has always been treated with reverence becoming one of the most beloved cultural heritages. The convent towers the Monterosso bay and it is located on the hill which separates the ancient hamlet form the small town of Fegina.

Because its position, towering over San Cristoforo Hill, where the ancient castle originated the hamlet, it is visible from all Cinque Terre. It is a strong touristic attraction also due to the high artistic and historical value of the treasures hosted in it: the seventeenth-century capuchin church with its wooden altar and choir, art masterpieces (including “Crocefissione” attributed to Van Dyck, Luca Cambiaso’s “San Girolamo penitente”), and its vaulted refectory with “La Veronica” by Strozzi; the traditional features of the convent are combined with the sublime view of the Cinque Terre. The convent appears in most of the artistic travel guides of the territory, both Italians an internationals, and along with Cinque Terre, it is listed as an Unesco site.
